With the wintery conditions continuing for some time and with lots of people looking to make a journey to see family or friends it is worth taking a few precautions. Make sure your vehicle is in good condition:-
Get a winter check up from your local garage (check battery, top up coolant, windscreen washer fluid and engine oil. Are your tyres in good condition, with at least 1.6mm of tread across 75% of the central span of the tyre. Ensure there are no cuts, rips or tears in the tyre walls.:-
Check your tyre pressures - REMEMBER if you are going on a long journey, carrying extra weight or towing to increase your tyre pressure according to the manufacturers guide.:-
Plan extra time for the journey:-
Remove any snow from the roof of your car and also off the bonnet. Clean your head and tail lights and registration plates (front and rear).:-
Inform people of your estimated time of arrival (eta).:-
Pack warm clothing, wellington boots, hot drinks and some food, a shovel, charge your mobile phone fully.:-
DRIVING IN SNOW / ICE:-
Move off in 2nd gear:-
REMEMBER - We use the TWO second rule in the dry, FOUR second rule in the WET and up to 10 times the original spacing i.e. 20 seconds in snow and ice. This is a huge gap but is is needed if you need to stop.:-
Try and drive in as high a gear as your car feels capable but at much slower speeds e.g. at 25 mph use fourth (4th) gear instead of third (3rd).:-
When you need to slow down plan a lot further ahead, come off the gas / accelerator pedal a lot earlier change down through the gears sequentially to assist in a decrease in speed:-
